Consequently, there was a lot of anticipation for the 2024 release because of the expected substantial improvements. It may seem like a downgrade, but the removal of the RTX 4090 option from the G14 is really a positive thing—here’s why.

Why Did Asus Degrade the ROG Zephyrus G14?

These screens also include support for NVIDIA G-Sync, a reaction time of under 0.2ms, and VESA DisplayHDR True Black 500 certification.

You may be wondering, however, because monitors and TVs often have varying refresh rates. The catch is that the brightness of an OLED screen is proportional to its refresh rate; hence, a display updating at 10Hz would have much lesser brightness. To avoid this issue, TVs and monitors recalculate the brightness of each pixel each frame, which may be resource- and battery-intensive when applied to laptops.

How does Asus manage to implement a variable refresh rate, then? To keep the panel’s brightness consistent when showing pictures, the business locks the pixel emission rate at 480Hz for the G14 and 960Hz for the G16. But how efficient and how much electricity this method uses is still unknown.

Intel Core Ultra 9 and NVIDIA RTX 4090 GPUs (115W TGP) are available in the G16, while AMD Ryzen 8000 series CPUs and up to a 90W TGP NVIDIA RTX 4070 GPU are available in the G14. While all versions are compatible with up to 32GB of DDR5X RAM, there are some minor differences between them, such as the G14’s unique microSD card reader and the G16’s bigger 90Whr battery as opposed to the G14’s 73Whr option.

Lastly, Asus has included a new Slim Power jack connector in place of the standard USB-C charging port. Concerns over USB-C’s efficiency above 140W prompted this invention.
